Oak Beauty Moth

The Oak Beauty – Biston Srataria

UK Moths Are Emerging

I spotted this well-camouflaged moth resting on the ground while I was visiting a supplier. The Oak Beauty is a very attractive and relatively large moth with two distinctive brown bands on the wings.

This moth is also among the very first moths to emerge at the beginning of the year, so is only seen between March and May.

As the name suggests, the moth larvae feed on Oak but have also been recorded feeding on other plant species.
